What IS a packgoat?

Basically, a packgoat is a type of pack stock that carries the gear and belongings that people don't want to or aren't able to carry. This is great news for families with small children, people with disabilities or injuries, and those who are getting along in years (us included!) who would rather enjoy our surroundings and the hike than struggle with the weight of a pack and have to stop before we want to.

Did you know?... Goats have been used as pack animals for centuries. In more recent times, these gentle, intelligent animals have become popular all over the world as outdoor companions for humans, but have only become popular in the U.S. during the last forty years or so. Packgoats are a wonderful way to hike or walk without the need to carry a lot of camping or backpacking gear. They are also used by hunters to pack out game from dense woods or difficult terrain for which horses, mules, or llamas aren’t practical.

What's a packgoat tour?

Our tours are 1.5 - 3 hour, easy-to-moderate hikes through trails around the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area. Tours always start with a short instruction in safety and working with the goats. As you walk and get to know the goats during the tour, you’ll learn about goat personalities (all individuals, all unique!) and just how sweet and friendly they can be. You’ll also learn about the flora and fauna along the trail, and a bit of history of the local area. Throughout the tour, you’ll actually be supporting New Mexico’s forests and open spaces by using “no trace left behind” practices. At snacktime , you'll enjoy delicious, locally grown foods – and best of all, the goats will carry all the stuff!
